Movable bridges show a greater lack of aesthetic treatment than almost any other form. They must depend chiefly on their outline for their appearance, and their form should, so far as possible, show their purpose and action. Movable bridges are usually built across rivers to allow passage of shipping beneath. They can move up and down, rotate, float and can even move cars in lifts hundreds of feet above ground. The movable bridges are separated into bascule bridge, swing span bridge and vertical lift bridge.
