The Worshipful Company of Paviors
Objective & Purpose

The purpose of this travel award will be to enable students to travel anywhere in the world to observe some aspect of the construction industry for the purpose of advancing their studies. Such travel should normally be undertaken as part of the long vacation or as part of a sandwich placement scheme.

Applications would be particularly welcomed from students who have not yet experienced living or working in a country different to their normal home.

Benefits of the Award

A grant of up to £2,000 from the Worshipful Company of Paviors with matched funding from the Faculty of the Environment of the University of Portsmouth will be made available to successful student(s). Supporting contacts from the Worshipful Company of Paviors and from the University of Portsmouth will be made available to students so as to gain the maximum benefit from their travel.

Obligation of the Award Holder

On completion of their travels the successful award holder(s) will write a report giving details of their observations and experiences. In addition to this, the award holder(s) will be required to make presentations to meetings of the Worshipful Company of Paviors and to the Civil Engineering Society at the University of Portsmouth. The award holder(s) will also be invited to collaborate with the Worshipful Company of Paviors in any publicity events which it plans, which may include a Company Dinner.

The applicant(s) should draft a proposal outlining the following details.

  1. Scope and purpose of travel.
  2. Budget planning.
  3. Travel arrangements.
  4. Timescale.
  5. Support at destination.
  6. Risk assessment of proposal.
  7. Personal statement including career objectives.

Selection Procedure

Applicants' proposals will be judged on merit by a panel on which both the Worshipful Company of Paviors and the University of Portsmouth will be represented. Students will be required to make a presentation of their proposal to this panel.

Eligibility

Second year students on an MEng/BEng/CEM course, students who are completing the second year of the HND in C.E. and are to transfer to BEng, or second/third year students on an MEng course in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Portsmouth are eligible to apply. The scholarship is open to any student in these year groups. Applications may be made by pairs or small groups of students.

Timetable

Applications must be made in writing to the Head of Department by the 4th April 2003. The dates of the selection process will be announced shortly. Successful applicant(s) will be notified by the end of the Spring term, Friday 11th April 2003.
